An HS code is not just a label on a form. The classification can affect the duty band, excise or VAT treatment, conformity requirements, permits, valuation questions and whether a product is restricted or exempt.
Write a detailed description: material, function, composition, model, size, processing, packaging, intended use and whether it is a finished product, component or raw material. Keep technical sheets, photographs, catalogue information and supplier declarations.
Use the Kenya Trade Portal product lookup and the current EAC-CET material as research starting points. Then give the evidence to the licensed clearing agent or other qualified professional responsible for the declaration.
The correct approach is a documented classification decision with the source evidence, date, responsible person and any uncertainty noted. If the product is new or technically complex, ask for professional confirmation before paying a deposit.
Do not promise a selling price or margin before the classification and product procedure are checked. Record the tariff assumption as an input and rerun the downside case if the code, duty, permit or conformity path changes.
The Import Landed Cost & Margin Planner keeps the commercial assumptions editable. The Import Compliance & Documentation Control Pack keeps the classification and evidence trail with the shipment file.
